I can’t sleep. I have really intense pain in my tooth/gum. It’s effecting all of the right side of my mouth. It’s the worse tooth ache I’ve ever had. My cheeks, jaw, neck everything hurts😭😭 my dentist went private and I can’t afford it. Don’t know what to do but this has been going on 2 weeks and has got worse 😭😭

Oil of cloves on a q tip will probably provide temporary relief. But you will need to find a dentist.

Thank you. I have a wisdom tooth that’s come in at a weird angle. I don’t know if it’s that that’s causing it but my entire top right side of my mouth is throbbing😭

111 might be able to signpost you. Lots of NHS trusts are having to run dental emergency clinics to mop up cases involving patients without dentists. We were sent a whole load of bumpf about ours the other week.

toothache is just the worst.
What have you used so far for the pain? if you have any bonjela try that on the surrounding area.
Do you have any other symptoms? Such as swelling, a strange taste in your mouth or a temperature? Might it be an abscess developing?

111 will help you as mentioned above although you may need to travel to the emergency clinic, in our area it changes to various dental practices but they will deal with the presenting issue and then advise you to register with a dentist which at the moment is easier said than done.

I have swelling, jaw pain, neck pain, headache. The pain is even spreading round the top of my head it feels like. No temperature as of yet but I feel quite unwell because of the pain. It really is horrible. I’ve tried paracetamol, also orajel but nothing has worked

You really need to find an emergency dentist, the pain is unlikely to get better on its own.

For temporary relief, there's a brand of mouthwash called Diflam that you can buy over-the-counter at most pharmacies that contains anesthetic- much better than any home remedies or painkillers in my experience.

take a look at symptoms for an abscess as you will need antibiotics if it is.

A&E may be the fastest way to get a prescription if you’re able to get to one and they suspect it’s an infection.

Phone 111 who will signpost you to a dentist or clinic for emergency treatment only on the NHS .

you can go to a NHS dentist in any area so ask friends, family and ring around as far as you can travel.

NEVER use clove oil in the mouth , it is irritant, acidic and that’s without the problems of allergies.

I have had to take teeth out where clove oil has burnt the gum through to the bone .

put clove oil where it belongs …. In the bin.

You poor thing, toothache is awful.

If you think it could be an impacting wisdom tooth, that might fall under general medicine rather than dentistry (it won’t necessarily be a dentist who removes it - wasn’t for me). Def go to a&e. It’s shocking you can’t access medical treatment for this in the U.K. I think you can, just not via a dentist (evidently).

Whatever you do, don’t leave it. This won’t get better by itself. You could also be risking an infection and that could lead to worse things. Get yourself down to A&E asap.

A and e will not help with toothache , they are not set up to deal with it , indeed doctors are told not to deal with toothache as they are not qualified and do not have the knowledge . They do not have the equipment or set up in A and Evto deal with toothache L You will sit there for a few hours to be turned away.

phone 111 who will usefully direct you to someone who can help.

A maxillofacial facial surgeon is a dual qualified dentist and doctor so it would be a dentist who had removed it for you .

Thanks everyone. I actually feel quite dizzy with the pain now and I’m tired but no sleep. I think I’m getting a migraine too. I’ve put an ice pack on it which helps but only when I hold it on, as soon as I take it off the pain is back

You've likely get an infected/abscessed tooth. My sympathies, its horrible.
You need it treated somehow - at least antibtiotics, but then a root canal or extraction. Hope you can get it sorted.

Ring 111 now to start your referral for an emergency appointment and get yourself/someone to head down to a local pharmacy ASAP for better pain relief. Hope you feel better soon, dental pain can be brutal.

Last time me tooth was bad I called 111 and got into the emergency dentist
Please do this asap as it's not you going to go away. Tooth pain is really unpleasant - try warm salty water too but get some help

If there's visible swelling, you need to see an emergency dentist. Google for the phone number of your nearest one. Meanwhile, gargle with salt water and get some ibuprofen & codeine tablets from your pharmacist for pain relief.

Been there, got the t-shirt. Twice. It's the worst pain I've ever experienced.

Do go to an emergency dentist ASAP. Paramol is an excellent painkiller too ,I had awful tooth ache, and this was the only thing that helped .Do not take anything containing paracetamol along with it though. Also sitting up in bed propped up by pillows helps .This was recommended by the Nurse from 111 and makes it more comfy by taking the pressure off,Hope you sort it soon OP

Sounds like an abscess, you need to see a dentist pronto. Pain will only get worse. It was only relieved by extraction for me.

Report

Plimsoll73 · 14/08/2024 07:34

Also most private dentists offer payment plans so I would enquire about that if it's unaffordable - but when I had an abscess I'd have paid any amount to get the tooth out of my mouth!

Oh right. It was actually my dentist who told me about oil if cloves. Private and expensive too.

Hi everyone. managed to see a dentist today. It’s an impacted wisdom tooth. He wants me just to use painkillers, gargle salt water and keep it clean. And then monitor it and go back if it doesn’t get better. I think it’s only partially emerged aswell. It’s been not too bad today, it’s mainly at night that it gets really painful. Painkillers and tooth numbing gel did nothing for it last night :( hoping it won’t be as bad tonight.

Do you have a phone number or direct access back to the dentist if you need it? Or would it be 111 again?

If it carries on hurting don't be bashful about being persistent.

Yes I can call them and they’ll see me again directly if needed. Tbh I’m confused as the tooth itself actually came through a few months back but it is not fully emerged and at an angle, but it caused no pain before when it first started coming through so I did think the pain might be coming from another tooth but as id mentioned the wisdom tooth he just looked at that. I’m sure if there was an abscess he would have said

It seemed a bit rushed appointment. I’m wondering what the strongest OTC pain killer might be that I can take as ibuprofen made no difference :(
