Ensure proper placement

Your Litter-Robot comes fully assembled and ready to use. Get started by following the steps below.

  1. If possible, place Litter-Robot in the same location as the old litter box (at least during transition).
  2. Make sure the unit is on a firm, level surface in a cool, dry location.
  3. Locate the unit near a power outlet. Ensure the unit isn’t pushed against a wall or into a corner.
  4. Place litter mats or rugs in front of the unit.

Add litter

Litter Robot 4 Quick Start Guide (3)

Add clumping litter

Litter-Robot’s litter sifting system requires clumping litter. Litter beads and crystals that are small enough to pass through the screen will also work.

What not to use

DO NOT use litters that are strictly absorbent, non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper-based, or wood-based pellets.

Don’t overfill

Fill the globe through the opening until litter meets the raised fill line when spread flat (about 8-10 lbs by weight or 1 gal by volume). Be careful not to overfill the Globe.

Introducing your cat to Litter-Robot

Most likely, your cat will quickly adapt to Litter-Robot. When using in automatic mode, be sure your cat or kitten weighs at least 3 lbs—the weight scale will not recognize cats weighing less than 3 lbs.

Empty the waste drawer when indicated

Litter Robot 4 Quick Start Guide (10)

Empty the waste drawer when indicated by the app or the flashing blue light on the control panel. How often you empty the waste drawer depends on the number and size of your cats. For two average-sized cats, twice per week is typical. For a single cat, once per week is usually sufficient.

To empty the waste drawer, simply pull out the waste drawer, gather the edges of the liner bag, and dispose. To install a new liner or trash bag, wrap the opening over the perimeter of the waste drawer. Push the remainder of the bag into the bottom of the waste drawer.

Clear bags work best. Please note that waste level readings may be inaccurate when using a dark bag, especially when the drawer is empty. As clumps start to collect in the drawer, the readings will become more accurate. For the most precise waste drawer readings and a seamless experience, we highly recommend using Litter-Robot Waste Drawer Liners.

Add litter as needed

How often you add litter depends on how many cats use Litter-Robot and how frequently they use it. Litter-Robot uses litter very efficiently since the patented sifting mechanism only removes the clumps. We recommend checking the litter level each time you empty the waste drawer. If the litter is below the raised MAX fill line inside the globe, add just enough litter to meet the line.

FAQs

Can I use pine pellets in a Litter-Robot? ›

The only litter that won't work with the Litter-Robot 4 is anything strictly absorbent, non-clumping or loose-clumping. Common examples include wood pellet litter and pine-based litters. Then comes the tricky part: getting your cats to actually use the litter box.

How long does the Litter-Robot 4 take to process? ›

It can be set for 3, 7, 15, 25, or 30 minutes. The default cycle delay is 7 minutes. This feature is also available in the Whisker app. You can reduce the cycle delay if it is important to minimize odor and/or the time that waste is available to other pets, such as dogs.

How does the Litter-Robot know when to cycle? ›

The Litter-Robot 3 is equipped with a cat sensor that detects when a cat enters and exits the globe. When a cat enters the globe, the cat sensor is activated; the blue light turns off and the red light turns on. Once the cat exits the globe, the countdown to a Clean cycle begins.

How often should I clean the litter on my robot 4? ›

Cleaning your Litter-Robot

Cleaning or soaking the globe thoroughly every 3 months will help prevent any excess weight from accumulating within the globe. Never submerge, spray, or soak the base or control panel as they contain sensors and electronics.

Can I use non-clumping litter in a Litter-Robot? ›

Litter-Robot is not compatible with litters that are strictly absorbent, non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper-based, or wood-based pellets. We suggest all-natural GreatLitter® for Litter-Robot.

Can I use crystal litter in a Litter-Robot? ›

Litter-Robot simply requires clumping litter. We recommend a high-quality, standard-weight, clay-based clumping litter, such as our premium cat litter. Some silica gel litter beads and crystals can also be used with Litter-Robot, as long as they pass through the screen.

What is the empty button on Litter-Robot 4? ›

The Empty cycle allows you to empty all of the litter from the Globe into the Waste Drawer for easy disposal. Use this cycle to change out the entire litter bed or before cleaning the Globe (see page 31). While the Globe is in Home position with the blue Light Bar on, press the Empty button to start an Empty cycle.

What does red light mean on Litter-Robot 4? ›

If your unit's light bar is solid red, this indicates that the cat sensor has been triggered (kitty entered globe). The unit will cycle once the cycle delay countdown is up or if you press the Reset button.

What does purple light on Litter-Robot mean? ›

A 3-second long press of the Cycle button will enable sleep mode. The light bar will change from blue to purple, indicating that sleep mode is active. The unit is programmed with a default 8-hour sleep period and repeated every 24 hours. The start of the sleep period is determined by the time sleep mode was enabled.

How often should you change the filter in Litter-Robot 4? ›

How often should I replace the Litter-Robot 4 Carbon Filter? For optimal odor absorption, we recommend changing the carbon filter every month. Replacement frequency is up to you and your cats' usage patterns.

What does pink light mean on Litter-Robot 4? ›

TP-Link Kasa lights will turn fuschia when the Litter-Robot waste drawer is full.

Does Litter-Robot 4 work without WiFi? ›

Litter-Robot 4 requires a 2.4 GHz WiFi signal and IPv4 or IPv6 addressing (5 GHz band not supported). * SmartScale™ technology to record cat weight is most accurate on a firm surface, not carpeting.

How do you make a Litter-Robot cycle? ›

Press and Release: Pressing the Cycle Button starts the Litter-Robot cleaning cycle. In order to pause the cycle, press any button on the Control Panel during the Clean Cycle. Press Cycle once again to resume the cleaning cycle.

What triggers the Litter-Robot? ›

Litter-Robot 4 uses laser and weight sensor technology to detect when your cat enters and exits the globe, which triggers the countdown timer and cleaning cycle.
