Fast Facts

  • Numerous slow-moving storms occurred from 4:30 PM Tuesday afternoon, June 25, into Tuesday evening. Between 5 and 8:30 PM these storms were at their strongest intensity, producing locally heavy rainfall, scattered damaging winds, scattered large hail, and severaltornadoes that were generally not strong but still capable of damage.
  • Four tornadoes wereconfirmed by NWS Storm Damage Survey Teams and additional EMA coordination and using video and photo evidence:
    • an EF1 near Preston/Spragueville, IA (Jackson County)
    • an EF0 near Ely, IA (Linn County), and
    • two EF-Unknowns near Olin, IA (Jones County).
  • These storms quickly developed stronger, with multiple becoming supercells (meaning they have rotating updrafts) having some characteristics of more classic tornadoes, especially near Preston/Spragueville, IA.
    • The tornadoes in their early part of their life cyclesexhibited traits more so of landspout tornadoes. Landspout tornadoes often:
      • havea narrow, rope-like condensation funnel
      • at times they aretranslucent or eventransparent
      • develop on a well-defined weather boundary (in this case, a nearly stationary front)
      • form while the thunderstorm is still developing
  • Severe straight-line winds of 65+ mph were observed from Iowa City through Muscatine County and into the southwest Quad Cities metro, including with some temporary embedded rotation; scattered wind damage reported.
  • Torrential rainfall with slow-moving storms, including amounts as high as 3.30" in Almont, IA in Clinton County, IA and 2.78" in Galva, IL in Henry County.
